March Writing Updates: Time to Get Stretchy

March Writing Updates: Time to Get Stretchy

I can’t believe it is already March! I have heard people say they feel like the months are dragging on, but I feel like they have been just flying by. March already. Wow.

In some ways, I feel like we haven’t done very much since the year began. Every day tends to look quite the same when you’re a homeschool mom. Wake up, get breakfast out of the way, educate your children, chores in the afternoon, try to get some writing done, grocery shopping if it’s Tuesday… Maybe it’s that way for everyone, but I don’t recall there being this high a level of “days running together” when I was working outside of the home.

Still, things have definitely been accomplished. I’ve finished the writing portion of a new children’s story I am very excited about. Having a little more difficulty moving on to the illustrations portion, as I usually hire someone else for that. This will be the first time I work on my own illustrations and I’m kind of nervous about how that is going to go.

I’m also a decent way through my middle-grade chapter book rough draft. I have also started to do my first edits on the beginning chapters, and boy do they need some work. I’m not used to writing at such length, so I realized I needed to go back and fill in a lot more detail about what is happening in each scene. This is quite a stretch for someone who really only has experience with short story formats. But it’s a good stretch. A necessary one.

I’m hoping that this is the year that I figure out how to effectively stretch myself into those things that will make me a more prolific (and dare I say it: profitable) writer. Including marketing, which has always been somewhat of an enigma for me. I am once again getting to the point where I have more ideas than I know what to do with– a great problem to have, to be honest, and I’m definitely not going to complain about that, but my consistency in writing is proving that even a waterfall of ideas can be an issue if you can’t find a bucket for filling. And by that, I mean it’s difficult for me to find time to write, not only because I have more children than I have hands and because life can occasionally get in the way, but also because consistency is not something that comes naturally to me, which is likely true for most people, but especially true in my case.

These are all things I’m going to have to manage and work out in the upcoming weeks and months, especially as I get closer to having more writing to publish!
